I am glad that Bush let those poor men out of jail, we need more like them! I think we need to get that electric chair that set that one inmate on fire out of retirement and broadcast some drug lord executions... Not sure what else would stop this stuff, they own way too many of the people that are supposed to be stopping them! There are already pretty extensive drug training programs in the schools but that doesn't stop people from throwing their lives away on them, like my former best friend in high school. I have no idea if she is alive or dead and I am sad for the kid she is rumored to have had, I hope he or she is well but unless her mother straightened out and didn't fry her brain completely (she was pretty fried last I saw her) I am afraid for the child (or children, she probably has had more as it has been a few years since then). It is definitely a problem on both sides of the border, and those poor women who have been killed and no one seems to care, that is beyond wrong!

(NukeDad) It looks like the influx of the 5,000 soldiers is having an effect; violence is way down in the last couple of weeks.

update! CNN currently has a breaking story on this.

(NukeDad) Yep, seems like some of the media outlets are starting to pay more attention to it. Good.

It is terrifying to me that society in general would rather turn away, watch tv, and pretend that this does not exist. Too many of us are of the NIMBY variety and believe that the effects only hurt those who "deserve it" because they are in the drug scene. The reality is that it effects everyone of us in many ways.

(NukeDad) Very true; and you're correct-people can't be bothered with what's going on in the world when American Idol is going to be on in 15 minutes. People have to have their priorities, you know.

The United States could act, and act aggressively... but our pain threshold hasn't been passed yet. And based upon the amount of nationwide uproar (or lack thereof), this is going to keep going on unchecked.

Would be nice if we could pinpoint a linchpin in the whole operation that if taken out would cause the empire to crumble. I dunno... wishing for a solution but feeling very helpless.

(NukeDad) True, Tom; we tend to be reactive rather than proactive. The current turmoil in Mexico is actually a by-product of the last linchpin being removed. When the last leader of the Juarez cartel was killed everyone started jockeying for position, and the other cartels tried to move in and fill the void. We'll see what the soldiers can accomplish.

It sounds like the government has already failed in Mexico and will fail here too if we don't start enforcing border security.

(NukeDad) People think it's just about illegal immigration, but it goes way beyond that. Alot of people sneaking across the border aren't even from Mexico, they're hardened criminals from Central and South America.

This is insane. As if we didn't have enough to worry about already...right?

(NukeDad) The State Dept. has already said the 2 countries most likely to have their governments fail are Pakistan and Mexico.
