The Off-Season
I’m getting all geared up to coach NukeBoy1′s flag football team again this year, and I’m wondering about the time commitment. Will I be able to spare the 1 hour a week needed for practice? Will the 2 hours spent in the sun on Sunday afternoon become too tedious? I’m toying with the options. I know that I’ll be spending hours in the film room dissecting opposing defenses. Recruitment is down this year, but I should have 3 returning starters from a team that went 4 and 4 last year. I think we’re poised for a run deep into the playoffs. My only hope is that I’ll be able to crush my nemesis; Coach Crow-Eater. I can’t wait to run up the score on him. Oh, wait, that’s right; we don’t keep score at the Y. That’s OK, the kids do. Here’s a short video for you to enjoy about another Coach who has his “priorities” straight. (?) You gotta love that Reggie Greengrass; he’s so insightful.

If your team manages to figure out which end zone to run toward this time around, they’ll be unstoppable!
(NukeDad) HEY! That was uncalled for! I buy EVERY player a compass at the beginning of the season.

You don’t keep score? What weirdness that be? Everyone’s a winner?
(NukeDad) That’s right, the Y doesn’t keep score. I’ve mentioned it in many coaches meetings, but I’m always rejected. It doesn’t really matter anyway, the kids keep score and shout it out during the games anyway. They know who wins.

I hate not keeping score. Everyone is not a winner. Kids need to learn how to handle failure. I may have competitiveness issues.
(NukeDad) If you’ve got issues Otter, then I have the same ones. It’s funny, they won’t let us keep score, but then they say that once a kid scores 2 touchdowns, he can only run with the ball; you can’t throw to him.

But blogging is still your #1 priority right?! That two touchdown rule would maybe make sense in practice if trying to build up the skills of the kids who are not necessarily getting as much time with the ball because of the stronger players being naturally focused on but in a game that is pretty unrealistic. The no score and other rules are just going to set the kids up for disappointment later if they try out for teams that are actually competitive and only accept and play kids that do well. Better to teach them how it works from the beginning I think.
(NukeDad) Right now, reading has been my #1 priority. I just need to even it all out a little better. The “no keeping score” rule is a joke anyway, the kids keep score and always know who won and who lost.
