Redeployment Is Not An Option

If You Give A Hobo A Porkchop

miseryThe NukeKids have a myriad of children’s books; we’ve been accumulating them since NukeBoy1 was born.  We’ve got most of the classics; Dr. Suess, Charlotte’s Web, Sarah Boynton, whose titles If You Give A Mouse A Cookie and If You Give A Pig A Pancake inspired the title of this post.  Lately I’ve been relegated to the role of “Assistant Reader” for NukeGirl when she gets home from kindergarten.  We aren’t up to the “classics” yet.  We are stuck in rhyming and phonics land.  We’ve been reading gripping novels such as; I Can Play, Who Can Win, I Am Fox (a scintillating tale of a juvenile member of the dog family trying desperately to stay out of a box and avoid wearing sox) and War And Peace. Don’t ask me how that got in there.  We’ve had it 3 months and we’re on page 2.  Maybe I’ll write her teacher a note.  Pray for me, I have no idea what she’s bringing home today.  I think I’ll go jab the corner of  Stephen King’s Misery in my eyes; at least the rhyming will be more interesting.

I’m assuming you chose “Misery” on purpose?

(NukeDad) Don’t get me wrong, I love reading with my daughter, I just can’t wait until the subject matter gets a little more interesting. To answer your question; yes. It was that or Cujo.

No, I wasn’t referring to the reading experience with your daughter, either: just the books.

You know, a couple years down the road you’ll be reading “Are you there God, It’s Me, Margaret” with her.

    or maybe not.

    (NukeDad) Judy Blume, hmm… I read “Then Again, Maybe I Won’t” when I was a kid. Then again, maybe I didn’t. ;)

My Personal favourites were The Paper Bag Princess, One Hungry Monster, and of course The cat in the Hat. Right now we’re stuck in books of all things Fairies. All though I did convince her to read SkippyJonJones in Mummy Trouble, about a siamese cat that thinks he’s a ninja/adventurer chihuahua with a mexican accent. Very good stuff indeed.

(NukeDad) Sounds like a Jim Carrey movie. If they’re willing to fork over the $15 million he’s going to want to squeeze into the catsuit everyday.

My kindergartner’s also big on the “If You Give A…” series right now, especially because his class went on a field trip yesterday to see “If You Give a Pig a Pancake” performed live at a local theater.

In addition to owning If You Give a Mouse a Cookie & If You Take a Mouse to the Movies, we currently have the following from our local library:
If You Give a Pig a Pancake
If You Give a Moose a Muffin
If You Give a Cat a Cupcake

And waiting for us when we return those are: If You Take a Mouse to School & If You Throw a Pig a Party.

Funny thing is, I don’t mind reading these books to him. They’re silly and playful enough to make reading them not feel like a chore.

(NukeDad) You’re right, those are great ones. NukeBoy1 used to LOVE Barnyard Dance. Those books aren’t a chore; unfortunately, the ones NukeGirl has been bringing home are.

So your supposed to read books with your kids? Who would have thought that was a good idea? Great book selections though. If I might add one that my teenage kids still talk about to this day, “Back on the Ranch.” A tale of a husband and wife and their seperate adventures involving, you guessed it, a ranch…

(NukeDad) I like the one (can’t remember the title) where the cows quit giving milk and type their demands to the farmer on an old typewriter. At the end, the ducks start typing their own notes. Very Soprano-ish.

Perhaps Moby Dick? I have tried myself to finish that on several occaions and couldn’t do it. Oh, well. War and Peace will take you forever to get through. Good luck.

(NukeDad) I tried Lord of the Rings 3 times. Couldn’t do it. That’s why I waited for the movies.

Heck with the books. I just haul in a mini DVD player and set it up with Lord of the Rings or Poltergeist. Like the dad said in Matilda, “there’s nothing you can get from a book that you can’t get from television faster.” Word.

(NukeDad) Except, maybe, math? No, math would probably be quicker that way as well.

I make Niecey read the books to me not the other way around, lol. She has read me, “If you give a mouse a cookie” several times, I believe the copy she reads was the one we had when we were kids. I didn’t know they made a series of them, I’ll have to inform my mother so she can see if the library has them. I think she is the only one in her class that is a proficient reader, I can’t believe she started reading before kindergarten and has practically perfected the skill since starting school. I didn’t learn to read until well into first grade! Now we are working on her writing skills, which are improving as time goes by, she sends me texts on skype, hehe.

(NukeDad) NukeGirl reads to me too, it just becomes an adventure when she gets to a new word.

I am so glad we are over the reader stage.

Well technically we aren’t. But I totally pulled the Autism card and said I wouldn’t do it.

    Sometimes that card rocks.

(NukeDad) Ha! I’ll have to try that one. Is there a tired and grumpy card?

When my first daughter was born, I was in my last year of getting my BS degree. There were many a night I would read to her my textbooks. Computer science is SOO much fun!

(NukeDad) The City Directory met with some resistance here, too.

Don’t worry, before you know it you will have worked your way up to Captain Underpants and all will be right with the world.

(NukeDad) NukeBoy2 loves The Captain, but he’s old enough to read to himself. I sneak it out of his room whenever possible.

I just finished reading Barnyard Dance about five minutes ago. The Hurricane doesn’t have time to wait for pages to be read though, so I was singing as fast as I could and still didn’t get the words out before she flipped the page. Who would’ve thought reading children’s books could be so difficult?

(NukeDad) That happened to me with NukeBoy1 and “Go Dog, Go” Towards the end I’d just say; “Go dog, go! Party in the tree! Go! The End”, and then we’d start all over again.
