Never been much for pulling hair, like you say - try to keep in as many as are willing to stick around, even if they are all going grey. "Efficacious" always sounded to me like a word someone would use if they wanted to sound smart, or wanted a more elegant work than "effective". I suppose it's a perfectly cromulent word though. Efficacious is a word that I hear a lot from my wife when discussing her work but when she used it around her sister one day it started an intense argument as to whether this was a real word or not, that explained a lot. The wife is in advertising and the sister got her nursing degree but never became a nurse, just not what she wanted to do. I would think that as a nurse you probably should know the word. Anyway, its amazing what they do not teach you these days in college. Here is one I discovered through spell check “wether”. Do you know it without looking it up?

(NukeDad) Captain Dad, I have to admit, I didn’t know it; I had to look it up. I’m thinking your sister in law could go work for a veterinarian; then she would know what “wether” means.

You know what I mean. Figure of speech. I think I’m going to start “Figure of Speech Thursday”. LOL

(NukeDad0 I know, just giving you a hard time. “Figure of Speech Thursday” is a good idea! How about “Euphemism Tuesday”?
